Michael's Musical Journey
Michael, a multi-talented musician, educator, and composer, is based in Richmond, VA. His professional journey began at the age of 19, and since then, music has been a significant part of his life.
Michael completed his formal music education at Virginia Commonwealth University, and he graduated Magna cum Laude in May 2019 with his Bachelor's degree in Jazz Studies/Performance with a Saxophone Emphasis. It was around this time that Michael started teaching music one-on-one.
He is a very successful peformer and composer, as he has been a key member of numerous bands in Richmond, including The Triple B Blues Band and the Soul Providers. Michael's versatility is evident in his leadership of various straight-ahead jazz groups, tailored for different events. Michael is also frequently on call as a freelance musician. Michael has also played with well-known Richmond bands. Michael's musical journey has been enriched by collaborations with world-class musicians. His talent has also led him to open for renowned touring groups like Local Natives and Glass Animals. Notably, Michael has shared the stage with celebrity performers including Jason Mraz and Hanson. As a composer/arranger, Michael has played his original music at various gigs and frequently works on new pieces. One of his big band charts, Honey Bourbon Blues, was premiered by the VCU Jazz Orchestra I.
Michael has had a vibrant music career due to his performance experiences, but teaching has played a major role in his success as well. Michael has over five years of experience as an educator at this point, and he teaches saxophone, piano, and flute to students of all ages. He is happy to teach all different kinds of students, but he is a particularly good fit for students who have special needs, especially those with ASD.
