Wayne M. Johnson is an American jazz composer and trombonist who has been hailed as one of the greatest collegiate band leaders of the past decade. Many of Wayne's compositions have become widely performed in several different idioms, and have paved the way for his success as a musician. He has also made a name for himself as a talented trombonist, having studied with trombone greats such as John Fedchock, Jeff Galindo, Fred Wesley, and Hal Crook. He is the most recent winner of the Yusef Lateef Award for Musical Excellence and has won many other honorary awards for composition.

Johnson grew up in the city of Richmond, Virginia, taking music classes from grade school throughout high school. He was raised by his mother and father, Wayne & Tonya Johnson. After high school, he attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, where he studied with Jeff Galindo and Phil Wilson, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Professional Music in 2010. After performing with several groups nationally and abroad, he attended the North Carolina Central University to complete a Masters of Music degree in composition while working as an assistant teacher on campus. There, he cut his teeth under the direction of Dr. Ira Wiggins in the NCCU Jazz Ensemble as the lead trombonist, studying privately with former Basie Band great, Robert "Bob" Trowers.

Over the years, Wayne has established a solid philosophy of music education, and has developed a series of teaching techniques that have helped students of all ages, skill levels, and musical interests to achieve success in their musical journeys.
